Vidushaka - विदूषक

The Entertainer

The Parrot

Vidushakas are represented by the parrot because like a parrot, Vidushaka's are very smart, humorous, and entertaining.

Smart

Parrots are very intelligent animals and enjoy interacting with people, and performing tricks. One of the most endearing traits of parrots is their uncanny ability to talk or mimic noises, including human speech, which imparts a seemingly human-like intelligence.

Humorous

Parrots are inherently playful creatures, and are found often doing various playful behaviors such as swinging on perches, playing with toys, or mimicking sounds and movements. Parrots delight in playful antics and engaging in activities that provoke laughter and amusement. Whether it is performing silly tricks, playing practical jokes, or engaging in playful banter, parrots have a knack for bringing joy and laughter to their surroundings. These jokesters can certainly make us laugh out loud from time to time. Parrots do what they do for the reaction, such as mimicking the doorbell sound and then perching stoically as their owner goes to answer the door.

Entertaining

Parrots can be very entertaining. Parrots enjoy mimicking their owners. Just talking to friends and family members in a parrot’s presence will allow them to pick up on what the person is saying and mimic it - and often at the most inopportune times! Parrots are highly expressive birds, using a combination of vocalizations, body language, and facial expressions to convey their emotions and intentions. Their expressive nature adds depth and charm to their entertaining personalities, making them captivating companions.

However, the human mind naturally shifts between the three gunas: sattva, rajas, and tamas. While the Vidushaka's mind is predominantly tamasic, the following outlines how it may manifest in each of these states.

Sattva

Peaceful. Clear.

They use humor to engage the audience but with the purpose of conveying a deeper meaning or concept.

Rajas

Passionate. Active.

They move quickly, be it their bodies (dance, sports, etc), or their fast talking mouths (storytellers or comedians). They are stimulating to be around because of their passion and dynamic expression of ideas, and a fast, and energetic mind. They may use stimulants like caffeine to give them more energy to continue to take on more than they can handle.

Tamas

Passive. Confused.
